Merit is currently delivering Solihull Hospital’s new state-of-the-art Elective Hub (Operating Theatre Block).

The £25m NHS project is a first-of-its-kind for Merit and will include the provision of a two-storey building, encompassing six high-quality theatres (3 ultra clean & 3 robotic) and supporting services to increase capacity for elective procedures at Solihull Hospital, resulting in an estimated additional 15,000 treatments each year.

Merit proposes to deliver the project through its FLEXI POD® solution, providing a fast-track design, offsite manufacturing and offsite pre-commissioning.

Essentially, a FLEXIPOD® is made up of different building elements (PODs and PAMs) which can be mixed and matched depending on a range of customer priorities.

This will provide the client with a hybrid of traditional build with aspects of MMC (modern methods of construction) for the shell and core and an offsite manufactured fit-out, facilitated through a PAM/POD strategy for the MEP services.

The ground floor of the Elective Hub consists of staff facilities, change areas and storage. The theatres are located on the first floor, along with clinical support areas and staff facilities. Plant will be located on the roof of the building.

Leveraging an offsite approach will allow for the hub’s completion by May 2024, with Merit delivering the project in only 10 months from start on site. This includes concept design and planning and commissioning. Merit will manufacture 81% of the new elective hub offsite at its Cramlington-based manufacturing facility.
