Merit, the UK’s leading industrialised construction and digital manufacturing specialist, proudly announces the successful completion of the new Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit at Bedford Hospital.
Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust appointed Merit to design and deliver this state-of-the-art facility aimed at improving healthcare services at Bedford Hospital. The new SDEC Unit will offer a wide range of emergency healthcare services specifically designed to address the needs of the local community.
Works to manufacture the facility’s offsite components began in January at Merit's smart factory in Cramlington. By prioritising a product-based approach that allows offsite and onsite works to occur simultaneously, Merit was able to complete this modern healthcare facility in just eight months. This showcases Merit’s innovative ability to deliver healthcare facilities quickly, whilst being tailored to meet the challenges of healthcare environments.
To deliver this cutting-edge facility, Merit utilised its UltraPOD® SFS variant. UltraPOD® is Merit’s expandable full-building solution that can be customised to create various types of buildings for different purposes.
The new SDEC Unit is dedicated to enhancing patient comfort and optimising the delivery of care, with the goal of reducing wait times and improving access to immediate medical attention. The innovative design has been meticulously developed in collaboration with clinicians and healthcare professionals, ensuring that the highest standards of care can be delivered.

Merit also recently completed a therapy-led rehabilitation unit on site at Norwich Community Hospital, facilitating patient transition from hospital care to community.
