Empowering cutting-edge research through innovative installation solutions at the UK's premier synchrotron facility.
Merit played a crucial role in the £250 million Diamond Light Synchrotron construction at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Didcot. This state-of-the-art facility is the UK’s national synchrotron, enabling groundbreaking research across various fields, from fossils to vaccines.
Merit was initially contracted to install the mechanical services, including stainless steel cooling water and carbon steel HVAC pipework, and following this, we expanded our involvement through the manpower installation contract. This required close collaboration with the Diamond Light team on-site for tasks such as receiving machine components, equipment assembly and installation.
Additionally, our team executed the mechanical packages installation by employing an offsite fabrication strategy, prefabricating nearly 30,000 meters of necessary spools at our facility in the North East of England. This innovative approach not only streamlined the installation process but also underscored our commitment to quality and efficiency in delivering advanced scientific infrastructure.
Key Features:
- Awarded the initial mechanical services installation contract in which we provided all trade disciplines for the project.
- Adopted an offsite approach using our prefab manufacturing facility prior to installation of mechanical packages on site
- Sourced and managed installation works of Synchrotron during the entire 2-year build programme.
Key Outcomes:
- Engaged in manpower installation, working closely with the Diamond Light team for on-site coordination.
- Streamlined operations through the prefabrication of nearly 30,000 meters of mechanical spools at our offsite facility.
- Enhanced efficiency and quality of installation, supporting the advancement of one of the world's leading scientific research facilities.
